Statement Regarding Demonstration in Lee Park on May 13, 2017

The University of Virginia includes diversity among its core values.  Respecting one another because of our shared humanity precedes learning and working together.  Building up our community and our nation is a task that takes the talents of all of our people.  We will of course encounter differences in opinion and approach, but these differences should never be exploited to create fear, division, and strife.

We respect the rights of free expression and assembly, and yet we also reserve the right to criticize those expressions and assemblies.  Last Saturday's protest at Lee Park appeared to be an intentional effort to emulate gatherings aimed at intimidating African Americans.  Such intimidation is inconsistent with the values we profess.
